SMD LED Displays
Monday, August 9th, 2010Surface Mount Devices (SMD) LED displays are attracting people’s attention more and more since they are introduced. A pixel of SMD LED displays consists of blue, green and red diodes that are mounted in a single package. Furthermore, this single mounted package is also mounted on the driver PC board. The individual diodes are smaller than a pinhead and they are set very close together. The difference is that its maximum viewing distance is reduced by 25% from the discrete diode screen with the same resolution.
SMD LED displays are normally designed in four different sizes which are 1206, 0805, 0603 and 0402. The 0402 size is the smallest, with overall package size of length 1.0 mm, width 0.5 mm and height 0.45 mm. After that, 0603 has length 1.6 mm, width 0.8 mm and height 0.6 mm. 0805 has slightly larger that contains length, width and height of 2.0 mm, 1.25 mm and 0.8 mm respectively. Large banner sized SMD displays is 1206 which have size equal to 3.2mm x 1.5 mm x 1.1 mm (L x W x H).
Generally, indoor LED displays are based on SMD technology that have minimum brightness of 600 cd/meter square. This unit is also called nits. This is usually more adequate for corporate and retail applications, but under the conditions of high ambient-brightness, higher brightness may be required for better visibility. Functions, ceremonies and fashion shows are some examples of high-brightness stage lighting that require LED displays with higher LED brightness.
